Tessa Coleman: Flight Path

Until January 2027

We are delighted to be exhibiting Flight Path, bringing Tessa Coleman’s vivid perspective on the Somerset landscape into the heart of At the Chapel.

This Triptych depicts the Somerset Levels from the viewpoint of murmurating starlings flying overhead. The birds are flying north over flooded fields around Muchelney Island; east across the Avalon Marshes towards Glastonbury; and west over the River Tone as it bursts across its floodplain. Together, the paintings evoke the ancient seasonal ebb and flow of water across the Levels.

Starlings are tetrachromats, their colour world is far deeper and richer than ours, so intense colour combinations have been used to depict the landscape and the light filled sky from their point of view.

Tessa Coleman is a Somerset-based painter who exhibits widely and teaches at the Royal Drawing School. Flight Path was originally shown as part of a group installation at Martock Church in 2024.
